I don't have a NeXT yet and I won't know a lot about it for a long time after I get it, but I am intrigued by the possibility of cleaning up some tapes my dad made on various jobs years ago. I see there is a product called Digital Ears that can load the analog signal into the NeXT and that it comes with limited software, but it doesn't do what I am after. I also see that the monster scope package has a spectrum analyzer, but apparently no way to edit that spectrum. What I need is an equalizer program with variable width control. I have tried to use an analog room equalizer for this but it can't do the job. In some cases you need control that will taper off over an octave or more while in other cases you need very narrow cuts to remove or attenuate signals in a small frequency band, especially tape hiss. There is a professional product called No Noise that the record companies are using with varying success to remove hiss, ticks and pops from old analog sources. I am looking for something like that at a price aimed at personal rather than professional use. Is there anything in the public domain or is anybody working on a commercial product? Please let know if you have any information. -- Bob Peirce, Pittsburgh, PA 412-471-5320 ...!uunet!pitt!investor!rbp rbp@investor.pgh.pa.us
