Mixing 8bit and 9bit SIMMS works fine on the 040 motherboard. As pointed out, the memory test will fail at boot time. You can "safely" disable the memory test from the ROM monitor - you can decide if this is exceptable or not. My machine has 8-100ns, 8bit and 8-80ns, 9bit SIMMS and works fine.
