Sorry that I dont have anything controversial to discuss, but I do have a question: I understand that NeXT is selling machines at prices like these: Base ~6500 Base+laser ~8500 Base+laser+330HDisk ~10500 where Base is the Cube with 8 Meg... But I had heard that NeXT was going to also make a "subBase" available that would have 4 Meg instead of 8 Meg (and would be ~4500-5000) instead. Is this true? If so, I could "afford" a subBase at ~8500-9000. If not, well... Charles -- Paranoia is just good thinking when everyone is out to get you! Tech made me do this... no, no, really, its all MINE MINE MINE!!! uucp: ...!{akgua,allegra,amd,hplabs,ihnp4,seismo,ut-ngp}!gatech!gitpyr!isbell ARPA: isbell@pyr.gatech.edu

However, when it was discovered that the OS would have run only in a limited way in 4 megs, the standard 8 meg configuration was settled on (NeXT wanted to have all users possess a fully-capable box; this decision was not unlike the one that mandated that all machines should have a DSP chip). I agree that given the recent dramatic drop in memory prices (you can get 4 megs for about $700), the $1500 difference in what a 4 megger would have cost and the current model would make the former a good buy. Sooner or later, given the realities of the marketplace, it's certainly conceivable that you'll see prices drop somewhat on the NeXT workstation (as well as others). John Heckendorn p.s. I was just comparing these prices with the campus prices for Macintosh stuff. Yikes...once you buy a IIci, keyboard, monitor, hard drive and some software, you are in to about 6K. I'm selling my Mac+ at home and getting a NeXTstation as soon as I can convince the department to buy me one. A guy up the hall who bought a IIfx is crying about it now. -Bill

I don't suppose that they have a t-shirt on their list? I have seen
Amiga and Apple t-shirts on campus. I think the Cube needs to make
its presence known.

Actually when our district sales people from NeXT were here they *gave*
away a bunch of T-shirts with the NeXT logo on it. . .

I have been hearing all sorts of rumors from people that NeXT is intending to raise the price of the NeXT Station some time during the coming summer. I heard this from someone who works at the computer store that sells them. Does anyone know if there is any truth in this and what the price difference is likely to be? Not that anyone has any reason to listen to me (because I don't
know), but I think this is probably just a rumor. It wouldn't
make all that great of business sense to raise the price of
something _after_ you've sold a billion of them. If NeXT
wanted to make more money, the time is now (everyone's been
impressed with the price of the NextStations, I think). By
this summer, they'll have sold the majority of the systems
they sell this year (I mean that as in 60% or so, not
90% :-). I think standard practice is to _lower_ prices
to spur sales.
Just comments. Again, I don't know, so don't use me as a reference
when spreading this rumor . . .
