[comp.sys.next] Installing 2.0 on a 105MB disk???

mahesh@caradhras.cc.nd.edu (Mahesh Subramanya) (02/03/91)

Well, I successfully manages to toast two of my NeXTstations.

"No Problem", i thought.
"There is this wonderful program called BuildDisk", i thought.
"I'll netboot my NeXTStations off a cube, and reinstall the system on
the disk using BuildDisk", i thought.

WRRRONGGG!!!!

To my horror, there is no BLD.105, or anything even remotely close
to that in /etc! Naturalment, BuildDisk choked magnificiently since
even with the utmost in vim, vigour, and magnesium, it is plenty difficult
to stuff 371057KB on a 102400KB disk..... In short, it didna work.

So, How exactly does one go about reinstalling the system on a 105 MB disk?

This is really a pretty important question since I need to install systems on about 10 "virgin" Quantum 105s.

Or, am i missing something incredibly glaringly totally obvious (lie an
app called Build_105MB_Disk??? Wouldn't be the first time!!)

Thanx for any responses...

Yes you are right, there is no BLD.105, I have requested it, but no
one at NeXT would commit to releasing it to me, MIT microcomputer
center, MIT campus consultant, the regional reps.... you get the
idea...

So you could go to your "authorized" NeXT center and plead for
help. Or if you are gutsy and "know what you are doing" write
your own BLD script. Since I have not made a grocery list of
what is on a 105 drive I can not supply you with one. It is doable
and possible to make most things fit...
