Okay, the deed is done, my Cube is definitely on the way. I'm REALLY looking forward to using it for graphics, but I have another reason for buying a NeXT. I want it for music. It seems to me that this has to be _the_ best machine available for music. The power, the speed, the ODD, the DSP--it screams out to be used for music. I recently posted a message asking for MIDI interfaces for the NeXT and I have received a lot of mail saying that the thing to do is get a Mac MIDI->serial connector (thanks to everyone who took the time). Great. Nice and inexpensive, I'm game. Now comes the hard (?) part. The software. I spoke to someone at Coda, authors of MusicProse, and asked if they had plans to release Finale in a NeXT version. I was told that they had put ALL NeXT development on hold to concentrate on the MS-DOS world. Now this may have been a quick, glib anwser on someone's part, or they may be totally serious. Either way, the mere idea seems crazy to me. I use an MS-DOS machine. It is the WORST platform possible for music. Even the damn Atari can beat it hands down. They seem to have gone from the most promising market, to the most problem-prone. I'm at a complete loss to understand it, but that's their problem I suppose. I have to question the logic behind a company that would release a music scripting program before a msuic composition program. Maybe it was easier to port? Sounds like the proverbial cart before the horse. Having said that I look for two things from the net... 1. If anyone would care to illuminate me and everyone else as to what Coda is trying to do, I'd love to hear some of the logic behind their decision. I have no doubt that I'm missing something key here. 2. Does anyone know of any available, soon-to-be-available, or rumoured sequencing/composition programs for NeXT? If there are none, I'd like to strongly suggest that bored programmers (yeah, right) look into the project. A good product will have a guaranteed base of support. (bass of support?) I'm a little out of date re synths/computer-music, but this was also one of the reasons I got my Cube.
