[comp.sys.next] cheap cubes - spivs at Macworld?

asmith@questor.wimsey.bc.ca (Adam Smith) (01/17/91)

I have heard from a number of sources that someone was hagning around
outside MacWorld Expo selling cubes for 2795$. Does anybody know anything
about this?

Yes, I've responded to the ad and have found out that the machines are being
sold by businessland. They have about 150 machines that were used in a
training facility for sales staff.
  Prices:
    Cube, OD, 8m, 40m transfer drive, Full v1.0 sw & docs, 30day warranty-$2795
        less 40m transfer drive-$2395
    laser printer-$1300

I was told that much of this equipment was barely used and is in great shape.

Does anyone know if they still have old cubes in stock?
Also, does anyone have a phone # for this vendor?

I'm planning to get a NeXT, and getting an old cube + 68040 upgrade
board seems to be THE way to go since I want to geta NeXTdimension
board sometime in the future (if I can afford it).

Btw, I just got the "Fall 1990" price list. Does anyone else find the
prices on hard disks and RAM a *bit* high? The 340 MB hard disk drive
lists for $2,995, more than twice what you pay in The Real World, and
RAM is even worse; 4*4 MB SIMMs cost $2,995 vs less than $1,000 elsewhere.

Pity really -- it would be nice to get everything from one vendor
instead of having to shop around.

We've ordered our cubes, so it's now safe to post this. :-) You want to
speak with Norm Gilbert at Businessland in Hayward CA(?). All orders
apparently must go through him. Phone number is 408-437-0400. I did not
get the impression that stock was limited.

They seem to be a good deal. He promised to personally check each system,
replace any flakey optical drives, and perform a 24 hour burn-in before
shipping. 30 day replacement warranty on entire system. The first cube
ordered here we were told about 30 days before shipment. I was told about
2 weeks before shipment. They accept all sorts of plastic money.

I ordered my Cube from Norm yesterday and he said that he had about
30 of them left. He also told me previously that he was processing
them at a rate of about 5/day.

I was told he has 30 or 40 of each of several configurations.
Here are the quotes I got:

 $2395 - 030 cube, 8MB, keyboard, mouse, monitor, OD, 1.0, etc.
+$ 400 - 40 HD
+$1500 - 330 HD
+$2000 - 660 HD

$1200 - printer ($1300 was quoted earlier in this thread)

The 2395 seems like a great deal.
Has anyone gotten better quotes on the other items?

My quotes had the HDs bundled.
I didn't ask if they sold them seperately.

They are not on the internet, but you can get there from here:
Norm Gilbert <73307.555@CompuServe.COM> <M2643@applelink.Apple.Com>
He answered from CompuServe so that may be preferred.

(408) 874-2623 - best place to leave a message.
(408) 437-4454 - Fax

Allow a couple days for a reply. Its a FIFO queue.

That 5/day is incoming orders. I ordered my cube on the 18 of Jan.
I was told yesterday Feb. 4 that they would start shipping (or call for
pickup if you rather) this week. The slowdown comes from them having to
build the operating system on the opticals and hard drives. They are
rebuilding the software because these machines were used for demo and
training and they want the software like it was from NeXT, this means
rebuilding the OS for every machine.

This is correct.

I'm a student at San Jose State and can get educational prices but this is
a better deal. For another $900 I get the '040 upgrade, $1200 for a
~300Mb hard drive, ~$450 for a floppy drive, $180 for v2.0

Total $2395, $1200, $900, $180, $450 = $5125 I can't get a NeXTstation
high capacity for that let alone a NeXTcube. Don't even think about the
optical.

The price for a NeXTcube high capacity w/OD is $7123 through special promo.
The price for a NeXTstation high capacity w/external OD is $7167 no
special promo. No expansion capability.

This number is direct to Norm. If you get lucky you won't need to leave a
message, but he is quite busy.

I am, according to Norm the #15 order for a cube. I was told that they
hope to get 12 machines a week out the door. This means I should get
my machine by the middle of next week. 8*) ---- We'll see about this one.
I'll believe it when it happens. I'll let everyone know when I get it.

Anyone want to buy a new NeXT at close to a sudent discount price. Boy,
have I got a deal for you. >8*)
