A while ago I posted about this problem. When I did an su I wasn't being asked for a password. It turned out that netinfo didn't have a password for root even though I had set one in some place or another. I know this because the login window asked for a password for root. I can't figure that out. I am running 1.0. Anyhow, I squared away netinfo and tried to su again. Now it asked for a password but wouldn't accept it. After a bit of fiddling around, I discovered you cannot use passwords with control characters for su. You CAN use them for loging in. Again, I can't figure why that is so. At any rate, this is too bad. Control characters allow simple passwords that are almost impossible to guess. For example, I am on investor. This would be a fairly simple password, but ^i^n^v^e^s^t^o^r would be a bit tougher to crack, but just as easy to remember. Can anybody tell me why I can use control characters for purposes of login on but not when I su? -- Bob Peirce, Pittsburgh, PA 412-471-5320 ...!uunet!pitt!investor!rbp rbp@investor.pgh.pa.us
