I don't remember seeing a posting on this topic, so either I'm more of a clutz than I thought, or others still haven't had the opportunity to remove and install their SIMMs. I received the '040 upgrade yesterday, about 2 weeks after receiving the 2.0 upgrade and about 7 weeks after placing my order (not too bad, so more of you should be receiving yours soon). I eagerly read the "NeXT 68040 Processor Board Upgrade" manual supplied with the upgrade and found it relatively easy to follow and well-written. The OD dust filter installation required a bit of improvisation. Although the instructions don't say so, installation is facilitated by carefully unplugging the wider data cable and unclipping both cables to get them out of the way. (Actually, a new OD data cable is provided in the upgrade, so delaying its installation until after dust filter installation is helpful.) I also unplugged the 4-wire cable from the right side (HD power cable?) to get it out of the way. The OD power cable plug is inside the dust filter, so must remain plugged in during installation of the dust filter. After the dust filter is snapped in place, try to route all cables to minimize air flow restrictions through the filter. The SIMM problem I had occurred because I did not read paragraph 6. on p. 12 carefully. It states that each SIMM "will slip in easily most of the way and then stop. You'll have to press down firmly to push it in the rest of the way." Even though I though I seated the SIMMs properly, I didn't. The symptoms were a system that when powered on, did not beep, the monitor lit up very faintly with a series of vertical lines across the dim screen, and only the initial disk access noises. No possibility of any diagnostic output or even powering off with the power key! So push down firmly on each SIMM until it SNAPS audibly into place and you'll save yourselve unnecessary dismantling and reinstallation. -- _____ ____ Art Isbell |\ | | | | \ 315 Moon Meadow Lane NeXT Registered Developer | \ | ___ |____| | | Felton, CA isbell@ucscf.UCSC.EDU | \ | |___| | \ | | 95018-9442 (408)438-4736(B) | \| |___ | \ |___/ (408)335-1154(H)

But if you do unplug it, make sure you plug it back into the power pins on the OD drive and not into the jumper pins on the Maxtor right above. Jacob -- Jacob Gore Jacob@Gore.Com boulder!gore!jacob
