[comp.sys.next] Connecting SCSI drive to cube

ddh@orage.mi.org (Dave Hale) (02/08/91)

I just ordered an '030 cube through Businessland sale. I'm also ordering
an '040 upgrade and version 2.0 of the OS. I have a HP SCSI drive (Model
HP97548S) that I've been running off from a Sun 3/50. I'm interested in
using this drive as the boot drive for my cube.

I just have a of questions on the procedure to do this:

  1) What would I need to do to mount the drive internally? What cable
should I use (I've heard the internal connector is a SCSI not SCSI-2)?
Am I going to have to change the cable when I upgrade to the '040?
Is there any problem in mounting an this (full height drive) along
      with the OD internally?

  2) I also have an Archive tape drive that I would like to mount externally.
Is there any problem with just buying the NeXT SCSI-SCSI-2 cable to
      attach it?

   Thanks for the info!
   - Dave

Use a SCSI-1 flat-ribbon cable. You shouldn't have to change it
when your upgrade comes--though I'm not totally positive about
this. For the time being, however, a SCSI-1 cable should work.
You should be able to mount it on the upper bay without any
problems. Take out your swap disk if one exists in your system.

From my understanding, you should be able to connect almost any
SCSI device to a NeXT running System Release 2.0 and it should be
able to work with the OS. I'll have to try that when my '040
upgrade arrives and use some SONY MO drives and DAT drives--I
don't expect any difficulties. Oh, yeah...a CD-ROM drive
wouldn't be too bad either...
