Hi. I have some questions regarding the installation of an internal 5.25" hard drive. I don't have access to NeXTAnswers at the moment so I'm posting here. What I have: - '040 cube - 105Mb internal half-height drive (came with cube) - Fujitsu 2263sa 5.25" 700Mb to-be-internal HD - I think I've set the jumpers ok on the Fujitsu (btw: what was that post I saw here that you can set pins "1 and 2" to get the drive to format to 700Mb instead of 660Mb? What pins 1 and 2? There are several CNx and CHNx with pins/jumpers. Can that person (you know who you are) be more specific?) - I have the /etc/disktab entries (although I don't like them - see below) - I've moved my 105Mb drive to the highest mounting position in the cube, just underneath the floppy. What I think I need at the moment: - Flat SCSI(1) cable - mounting screws What I want to do: - have both HD's installed in the cube - want the 105Mb to be the boot disk, not the Fujitsu - I'd like to partition the disks up into more than one or two partitions My questions: - will the 5.25 fit? I can't really tell just by looking. It looks like it will fit and coexist with the 105 (I hope). Do I need mounting brackets, or can I just screw the thing in? - why is it that I see from the disktab entries and the manual writeup on BuilDisk that 660Mb can *only* be partitioned in two (a and b partitions), with the intention of having system on pa? - the scsi cable: it appears that I'm supposed to daisy-chain the internal drives if I want them both. Am I on the right track? If I am, then I think I need to know whether the 105Mb is scsi-terminated. I can't find that info. As far as daisy chaining is concerned, what does daisy chaining "look like"? Is the device that's supposed to be in the middle (non-terminating) supposed to have two scsi-ports? Or is it a matter of bying a cable with some kind of "open head" so that you can attach the end of another cable on top of the "middle" one? That's sort of what NeXT User's Refernce says, but it isn't very clear, and the pictures show _two_ ports on the "middle" machine. So I'm confused about this. - swap space: I saw numerous posts about this but I don't quite understand the concept. I guess you're supposed to allocate say 20Mb on the hard disk for swap space. How do you do this? If my cube has swap space, I can't see it via "df". df says my 105Mb has 90Mb on partition a (the only partition) and nothign about any swap space. - /etc/disktab: why isn't there an entry for teh quantum drive that's sitting in my cube? It is a qunatum, isn't it? - as an aside, I set up some user accounts. In the NeXT manuals it says that it uses NetInfo to store this info. What is /etc/passwd and /etc/group for then? Also, I changed the /me account to /home/me, changed some group memberships etc. These changes *dont* show up in either /etc/ files. Where is this info stored? Why aren't we supposed to "muck" with the /etc/ files even when the info conflicts? Well, that's about it. I'm sorry for asking so much. I haven't seen any of this on comp.sys.next before, and I haven't seen the answers to the questions in the manuals that came with my machine. I also didn't get a chance to browse through NeXTAnswers, unfortunately. Anyway, the drive is of utmost importance right now. I'll deal with NeXT peculiarities later. If anyone has dealt successfuly with the hard drive in the manner that I'd like to set it up, please please send me some answers a.s.a.p. Please email to andrewd@cs.tamu.edu. Thanks in advance, Andrew. -- -------------- Not an Official Texas A&M University Document --------------
