[comp.sys.next] The root directory is mode 1777

I rebuilt my hard disk using the BuildDisk application of System 2.0. I
noticed that the root directory is mode 1777. This means that any user
can add files or directories to the root, but that only the owner of the
root (root) or the owner of a directory or file in the root directory
can rename it, remove it, or change it.

Is there any reason for this?

I tried changing the mode of my root to 755 (readable and executable by
anyone, but only root can rename, add or delete files or directories).
This seems to have no effect. The automounts for optical and floppy
disks still seem to work.

While it is probably harmless to allow random users (programs) write to
the disk, this is not normally done in unix systems.
