[comp.sys.next] NeXT Comments

slfields@uokmax.ecn.uoknor.edu (Scott L Fields) (02/12/91)

I just need to say two things.

Could someone please give me the Phone # of the sale represenative for the
030 clearout at Businessland?

Secondly, this is in response to some information a friend in Washington D.C.
had to say about how his organization was treated buy the NeXT represenatives
in the area. (and I mean company employees of NeXT)

This is not about how bad NeXT is being but really how one rep was being
very rude and unbusiness like.

I know in particular my friend's company wanted to look at the NeXT dimension
setup that they should now have in their possesion at the NeXT location there.
When this rep was aproached by him his reply was along the lines of
"What it it worth to me? How many units will you purchase?"
For the most part, in any government purchase, you really never know when or
how many units are being purchased, since it has to go through proposals.
After he got past that, he asked for an appointment to bring a group in to
demonstrate the machine to. The NeXT reply was along the lines of
"It would be more convienent for me to come bring the machine out there.
Just tell me where and I will tell you when I can come."

My friend works in a classified area and very few people happen to have the
clearance to get in. He told him that he wouldn't be able to get in. Again,
he replied:
"I can get in, that's not a problem"
For which my friend replied "Do you have a "(some code) type clearance?"
This argument lasted a couple of minutes. Anyway I don't mean to sound
dweebish about this. And the problem is that this is one chain down the
grape vine, so I am giving the story as best as I can.

Generally, what I am getting at is that I think this kind of treatment could
get NeXT in quite a bit of trouble in government procurements. It is not unlike
government agencies to blackball companys. As far as this being a company that
that just doesn't pull a market share NeXT is interested in, I know that my
friend's company orders SUNS like they were regular PC's. Price is not an issue.
This is not an overstatement or threat but a real possibility that I think
could really get NeXT a BIG PROBLEM in the near future. Please don't take this
as a flame or insult. I really like NeXT, Inc. I WANT THEM TO SUCCEED!
