I just had several interesting conversations with the folks from
PLI (Peripheral Land) about their SYQUEST product (removeable 45Megabyte
cartridge drive, physically identical (disk drive mechanism) to the
Mac and PC products).
They said that the "/etc/disktab" shipped with NeXT OS 2.0 contains
definitions for the PLI drives; one should only have to plug in the drive,
boot the NeXT, and format the medium.
THE question: has anyone plugged in a NON-PLI drive (these can be had
through a Mac magazine for $500-$600) to the NeXT and tried to run?
As a side note, there is educational pricing for the PLI drives (which,
in my opinion, tend to run a little high -- last time I checked, the PLI
drives on the Mac were > $1000). The educational price, tho (which I was
asked NOT to post directly, contact information at PLI given below) is
much more reasonable.
PLI contact information:
Kevin Leipsic
1-800-288-8754 (gotten from the back page of NeXTWorld)
office phone # 212 (they have a touchtone front end which
routes the calls).
Note: I am NOT associated with PLI directly; I hope soon to be a happy
customer. I am impressed with the telephone support I got, particularly
since I don't own a PLI drive (yet).
