[comp.sys.next] SLIP/2400baud/X11R4

Hello,

I currently have my 105mb slab on an ethernet at UF, but will
soon be taking it home. I am trying to decide whether to buy a 2400
or 9600 baud modem (Intel's from NeXTConnection). Will SLIP run
acceptably over a 2400 baud line? Is anybody doing this?
I also would like the name & number for the company which
has X11R4. Please e-mail. Has anybody gotten this or hacked the
MIT version directly? Does this take > 200 mb to use?

thanks in advance

Depends upon how much you expect of it, and how much pain you're
willing to undergo. I ran our connection to the Internet over a
2400bps link (not even header compression :-( for several months.
Such a slow connection is useful for name and time service and mail
delivery, and the occasional finger or whois. Don't expect to be
pleased with its interactive responsiveness, and don't expect your
file transfers to move data any faster than the mean continental drift
rate.

Blow a few bucks on a modern modem, it'll be good for your blood
pressure.
