I've just ordered an '030 cube, and I'm looking at sensible upgrades I can add to it. Sure I'll be going for NeXTStep 2.0 as soon as they can really deliver it on OD, but how about hardware performance? I read that the original cube's speed was somewhat insatisfactory, and that the '040 is MUCH faster. I also hear that 8 MB RAM are rather a tight budget for NeXTStep, and Unix likes paging processes in and out of memory. Now for the real question: what will give me more bang for the buck: upgrading to the new board, or buying extra 16 MB RAM for a total of 24 MB? Is there anybody out there who upgraded an old cube's memory and would care to comment on the performance improvement? -- Federico Heinz (federico@actisb.uucp) -- Federico Heinz (federico@actisb.uucp)

I recently upgraded from NS1.0 on a '030 cube with 8 Meg of RAM to NS2.0 on a '040 with 24 Meg. The difference in speed was astounding. The sqat, black cube reminded me of a streamlined rocketship. It was like running a computer from another universe. Subsequently, I removed 16 Meg of RAM leaving my '040 with only 8 Meg. It is still fast, but nowhere near the improvement I had seen previously. With 8 Meg of RAM Nextstep can't switch windows without swapping! It is terribly slow and annoying. Considering that 16 Meg of RAM can be had for about 1/2 the price of an 040 upgrade board, I'd say that it definitely provides a better value in terms of speeding things up. If I were to order upgrades in terms of importance, I'd rank memory 1st, Nextstep 2.0 2nd, and the 040 board 3rd. -- Paul Homchick :UUCP {rutgers | uunet} !cbmvax!cgh!paul Chimitt Gilman Homchick, Inc. :Internet cgh!paul@dsi.com 259 Radnor-Chester Rd, Suite 140 :MCI PHOMCHICK Radnor, PA 19087-5299 :GEnie HOMCHICK
