Well, well...
The OS is fairly static - most of the files never change.
What you need to backup is user files and system data files. If you
have ~150 MB of user and data files, a total backup takes up about 30
floppies.

The only time you might possibly need a backup of the *OS* is if you
should manage to destroy everything on the disk. A set of backup
floppies is $400 from NeXT retail, a bit less with ed discount.
Rather than shelling out $400, you probably just want to talk to your
campus book store (or wherever you bought your NeXT) and make sure
that they have a set of backup floppies around that you can use to
rebuild a nuked disk.

The OS can be compressed onto about 30 or 40 floppies.  Still a lot, I know, 
but far better than the 138 figure you quoted.
