About 3 weeks ago I made a post that went somthing like: > Help! I think that I erased my internal 105mb thru the workspace manager! Well, I did .. but I wasn't root. So, BE WARNED it is possible to use the workspace manager to reinitialize the boot internal drive. Furthermore, since you are not supposed to be able to do this, there is no warning screen. So began the journey to rebuild my internal HD from scratch. With the help of Mike Carlton (thanks, mike) I was able to get a bootable floppy into the rom monitor. A few dances with the write permissions and I was able to recover ~70% of the information on the drive through a fsck. But fsck! all the files of importance to me were long gone. After a few white lies to 1-800 NeXT I talked to a NeXT technical support person. They basically told me I was fscked, so I used /usr/etc/disk to reinitialize the internal disk .. thinking that I could call me Campus Rep who would fix me up. Well, after a few more days of abuse from the Sun Worshippers I finally got together with my Campus Rep and another NeXTstation. However, after some 13 hours of trying all the things that should've worked I'd had enough and asked my Rep to do what I had done the day the drive crashed. Call NeXt and ask them to Fedex me a new drive. I said "Look, here is how I crashed the drive. Ok, so I wasn't paying close attention, but who would program a GUI to let you nuke your boot HD when you're not even root! Now fix the problem and Fedex me a new drive before your name is mud." Well two days later I was up an running, but really I was down over a week and a half despite my constant pleas to NeXT. All in all, I was quite pissed at NeXT, but refrained from flaming out of respect to my Campus Rep who really put his life on hold to help me out (thanks james lee).
