[comp.sys.next] next printer port

marcus@eecs.cs.pdx.edu (Marcus Daniels) (02/19/91)

Are there any auxilary (serial/parallel) ports on the Next Laser
Printer? If not are there adapters available? Also, what is the
status of the project to implement a printer library system for
the Next? Basically, do folks recommend the Next printer over
similarly priced alternatives.

thanks,

You are not likely to ever find an auxillary printer/serial port for the NeXT
laser printer. It is not only a dumb printer but a MORONIC printer. The NeXT
basically does a direct video dump to the printer. Buy video, I do not mean
from the display. The printer has no smarts what-so-ever, so using it with
any other purpose would be extremely difficult. It is kind of equivalent to
those HP laserprinters you see on the market that demand the controller card
be put in the PC to use it.

As a recent former owner of an HP LaserJet III PostScript, I can
whole-heartedly recommend the NeXT Printer over EVERY other printer made.

Reason? Speed. I printed a file from an 030 Cube to a NeXT Printer. By
the time I walked the 20 feet from the Cube to the printer (I'm not
in any way handicapped), the output was done. The same page, on my
Cube at home, sent to the LJIII, took 15 minutes! Apparently, the
reason is the data speed. The LJ, at its best, is limited to 9600bps.
However, the NeXT Printer Port is an order of magnitude faster (someone
can quote the exact specs, I'm sure). Plus, the 030 or 040, can interpret
the PS code much faster than most on board interpreters.

All that for under $1500? No problem. I'll be picking my NeXT Printer
up from the UMd Computer Emporium Thursday.

But the price sure is smart ...
