[comp.sys.next] Nroff docs for the NeXT

rbp@investor.pgh.pa.us (Bob Peirce #305) (02/21/91)

First of all, I bought a BusinessLand NeXT and, as yet, I have none of
the printed documentation. What I want may be there. However, outside
of a man page for nroff, ms, me, etc., there is none of the broader
based documentation one looks for to determine what commands are
supported and how they work. Is this stuff on the system? If not,
where do I look? I don't know ms and me. I have always used mm.

The NeXT printed (or online) documentation really doesn't cover nroff or many
other Unix utilities very well (man pages only). However, because NeXT Mach
implements most BSD 4.3 utilities and system calls, a series of BSD 4.3 manuals
available from USENIX in Berkeley does provide much of what I want to
supplement the NeXT documentation. 6 manuals are available including 2 User's
Manuals, 3 Programmer's Manuals, a System Administrator's Manual, and a Master
Index. These are available for a very reasonable price ($65 as of Dec. 1990).
And they are an attractive set of books with their brightly-colored spines and
Lucasfilm-designed Unix daemon on the covers :-)

For more info, contact USENIX directly. I'm not sure of their email address,
but I think it might be office@USENIX.ORG. Otherwise, their office is probably
listed by Berkeley, California directory assistance.
