I'm a semi-starving college student looking into buying a NeXT. What I'm wondering is, how much hd/ram is enough for a decent system? Can you get by ok on 8mb/105mb hd? What difficulties can you expect? Is the station a worthwhile investment considering it's lack of expandability? And lastly, does NeXT offer any sort of financing for college students? Thanks in advance, Brian -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reality is what YOU make of it. What difficulties can you expect? No. Consult this handy chart: 105mb disk - suitable only as a networked workstation 200mb disk - decent, usable standalone non-development system. 400mb disk - standalone development system. Now, yes, you CAN develop on a 105mb system. But the above systems offer, IMHO, a handy guide for cost vs. functionality. >Is the station a worthwhile investment considering it's lack of >expandability? No computer is a good investment. :) I expect that the NeXTstations are powerful enough to give many years of functionality. >And lastly, does NeXT offer any sort of financing for college students? No. SHOULD NeXT offer a finance program for college students? Hell yes. - -John H. Osborn -osborn@cs.utexas.edu

Hell yes. Our credit union will finance computer purchases by faculty, students, and staff. I think other institutions of higher learning have similar arrangements. I think NeXT has its hands full enough without setting up a financing arm at this point. <> Doctrine is nothing but the skin of truth set up and <> stuffed. -- H.W. What difficulties can you expect? It depends what you want to use it for. The base system with 8 MB RAM and 105 MB disk is just fine for running WriteNow, Diagram!, WordPerfect etc. If you want to use it for software development, you definitely need more disk. An external 300MB hard disk would cost you around $1,000, and with 400+ MB disk you can put all the NeXT development tools on your system and still have plenty of free space. >Is the station a worthwhile investment considering it's lack of >expandability? Definitely. At roughly $3,000, it is an excellent deal. If, horror of horrors, it should turn out that the NeXT won't meet your needs, you could most likely sell it to a real-world person for more than what you paid for it. -- Disclaimer: Wang doesn't care about my opinions, so why should you? No MC, no > VISA... how nice. I think no credit cards is a function of U0fW since San Jose State will and does let you use any form of payment for a NeXT. They also will let you order withoout a deposit if the orders don't have an exact or close to reasonable arrival date. I ordered my '040 upgrade with no deposit and when it arrives I can pay by VISA, MC, personal check, etc., etc. Kent -- /* -The opinions expressed are my own, not my employers. */ /* For I can only express my own opinions. */ /* */ /* Kent L.
