[comp.sys.next] Upgrades...

cnh5730@calvin.tamu.edu (Chuck Herrick) (10/20/90)

Here's what I know about the upgrade stuff. NeXT has separated the 2.0
upgrade from the '040 upgrade, and they have also created a special
upgrade for people with optical disks only who want to get a 105 MB
hard disk when they upgrade.

the part number for the '040 board only is N7003
the part number for the 2.0 upgrade is N5507
if you want both 2.0 and an '040 board you MUST
specify BOTH part numbers (N5507 and N7003).

the part number for the 2.0 upgrade already installed on
a 105 MB hard disk is N5509
the part number for the '040 board is (as above) N7003
if you want a 105 MB hard disk, 2.0 and an '040 board you MUST
specify BOTH part numbers (N5509 and N7003).

If you're at a University, contact your local student part-time
NeXT Campus Consultant for more information, otherwise try
your friendly NeXT dealer.

Like many others, I got my B'Land Inventory Reduction Sale Cube in late
November. It started as a 8Mb optical+40Mb system and is growing into a
real system. I first got 8 more Mb of memory, which made a noticable
improvement switching between and loading applications. I recently got
a Fujitsu M2263S disk and now have more disk space than I know what to do
with (for now!). The disk, as you would expect, has made the most
significant improvement in speed. Applications load much faster, the
machine boots faster, everything is faster.

Now I'm waiting for my '040 upgrade. I ordered it in November from MIT, right
after I got my cube. I keep hearing how people on the net are getting their
upgrades and was wondering how many people have got theirs and how many are
still waiting. It is now near the end of February and I haven't gotton any
word or estimate or anything. It just seems like a long time to wait.

Still waiting...

P.S. All this talk about people still having their '030 boards after the
upgrade; Aren't you _required_ to send your '030 board back as soon as you
drop the '040 in?
