[comp.sys.next] Using Digital Librarian - Catch 22

rbp@investor.pgh.pa.us (Bob Peirce #305) (02/26/91)

I am having trouble getting what I want out of Digital Librarian and
because of that I can't even use it to learn about it.

Anyhow, if I enter one key word I get 293 references. If I use two or
three words I get fewer references, but not necessarily to what I am
after. The problem is the key words aren't looked up in context. One
word may be at the beginning of a document, the second in the middle and
the third at the end, when what is really desired is for the three words
to be on the same or adjacent lines. At least you should be able to
search within the same sentence or paragraph. I can't figure out how to
do that, which makes the whole thing kind of useless for any document
more than a couple of pages long.

I believe I can also select an exact search, but that doesn't help. You
can't know the exact wording unless you already know the document.

Finally, it is not clear whether the Adobe documents are included in the
search or even if they can be included. They are a royal pain to read.
I would like to be able to use DL to search them.

If any of these problems have solutions, please point me to the correct
document. I will be happy to read it.
