[comp.sys.next] nppower-how do I turn the printer off?

39clocks@violet.berkeley.edu (Peter Marinac) (03/04/91)

Forgive me if this is covered in the Manual; I bought my cube from Bland and
it did not come with a User manual.

I use my machine at home and have a NeXT laser printer attached to it.
However, since I only use the printer once a week or so, I've gotten into
the habit of pulling the plug on it to save kilowatts and wear-&-tear on
the printer. One day, 'apropos' came up with 'nppower on | off' in
response to something I threw at it. Wow, I said, just what I was looking
for. But it doesn't work! Well, not unless you do an 'su' first.

Here is what I would like to do. Not being a unix wiz, I'm not sure where
to start. 1) Prevent the bootup sequence from starting up the printer.
I hope I can just comment something out to get this to work.

           2) Change nppower so that 'me' can power up the printer.

or, and this would be much prefered,

           3) Have the printer turned on the first time I try to print
something. Of course, this might not work because the
printer driver may time-out before the laser warms up.

Does anyoune out there have experience with this issue? I looked around in
/etc/rc, /etc/rc.local, /etc/hostconfig, and /etc/rc.boot, but couldn't
find anything relevant. There is a data structure described under the
manual entry for 'np' that stores information on the printer and whether
or not it is turned on. So if I get real desperate, I will write a
program to do what I want - actually, I'm kind of surprised that NeXT did
not include this functionality in the PrinterManager or Preferences
applications.
                              Thanks, Peter Marinac

Peter Marinac would like:

It can. You need to say "/usr/etc/nppower off" (or on), since /usr/etc is
not in me's default path.

>> 3) Have the printer turned on the first time I try to print

It does.

By the way, I just got my printer from Businessland. It was quite clearly
*never* used, however, they still say that I don't get the one year NeXT
warranty (just 30 days from them). It still had all the original packing
and protection.

One little problem was that it came with a power cord for Europe (possibly
why it was never used). I was too impatient to call B'land and wait for
a new cord, so I just cut the end off and put on a good ole' American
three-prong job on there (being careful to wire the hot and neutral
correctly).

It works great. It was such fun, I got carried away printing things and
killing trees. I've toned down now some, and only print out when I need
to actually give something to someone else.

I guess it has the infamous 'resonance-switching' power supply?
Can anybody out there tell me what that means?
