[comp.sys.next] how do I write to the login screen

Can someone tell me how to write (send postscript) to the
login screen.  I've tried using pft but apparently the 
program with which it makes a connection is not running
unless someone is logged in.  I have seen a NeXT that
had an image of a cartoon dog sitting on top of the
login window so I think there must be some way to do it :-).
