[comp.sys.next] How to get the Black Hole back

christopher@gacvx2.gac.edu (03/11/91)

The new workspace trash (aka recycler) icons are all right..., but I personally
would like to have the old black hole back. Today I realized there was a
possible way to do this: (NOTE: I have not tried all of this,
but it should work!)

1. Make a copy of /usr/lib/Workspace.app to someplace safe. Just in case.
2. Create a temp directory (optional)
3. Using the extract perl script posted here recently by Louis Mamakos
(louie@sayshell.umd.edu), extract the interesting things from the
    Workspace application:
     > cd tempdir
     > extract /usr/lib/Workspace.app/Workspace

You'll get about 115 files, some of which are kind of interesting.
(See recent message from scott@erick.gac.edu with the
subject: Neato /Net directory. This is another way to get a look at
     those interesting Net tiffs.)
4. The important files for this operation are:
    trash.1.tiff, trash.2.tiff, trash.3.tiff, trash.4.tiff, trash_full.tiff
The first is the empty recycler, the next 3 continue the animation, and
the last is the recycler with the dot in the middle.
5. Remove (or move) these files from the directory.
6. Aquire by some means the black hole tiff images. I assume that extracting
the Workspace on a 1.0 would work, but maybe not. If there are 5 of them,
(I don't have a set) you are in luck. Simply rename them to the identical
names given in #4 above. If there are fewer, you will need to duplicate
one or two, if there are more than 5, some will have to be left out.
7. Now, the extract script stores the creation times of the files it creates.
Use the Unix touch command to make the dates on the black hole tiffs more
recent than the former trash.?.tiff files it extracted.
8. Move the five tiffs for the black hole into the temp directory (or
   wherever you extracted to).
9. Use the combine script posted with the extract script to insert the new
   tiffs back into Workspace:
    > combine /usr/lib/Workspace.app/Workspace /usr/lib/Workspace.app/Workspace
   or if you are squeemish,
    > combine /usr/lib/Workspace.app/Workspace Worktemp
    > cp Worktemp /usr/lib/Workspace.app/Workspace
10.Double check to make sure everything looks o.k.
11.Power down, (if you are so inclined, pray at this point), power up.
12.Breathe a sigh of relief that it worked, or yell expletives at the
blankity-blank idiot/moron who posted this suggestion to the net (ie, me),
but then remember that no one forced you to try this. Then figure out how
to get yourself out of the mess you've gotten yourself into.

With all that said, I would be interested in hearing if anybody is successful
at doing this.

And now: A PLEA TO USERS OF SOFTWARE RELEASE 1.0:
I would be ever so humbly grateful and appreciative if someone using the
1.0 software release would extract the Workspace program and mail me the
resulting trash tiff files. NeXT Mail can be sent to: kane@nic.gac.edu
THANK YOU!

Remember, do not try this at home. Only try it on an unsuspecting friend's
computer (preferably one who will understand when/if it doesn't work).
