[comp.sys.next] Lotsa stuff.

dejnsen@caen.engin.umich.edu (Nik Anthony Gervae) (03/12/91)

I just got caught up on comp.sys.next!!! Yay!!! (Was 500+ articles behind)

  A bunch of stuff....

PostScript Level on the NeXT: I have read parts of the new Big Fat Red Book
(my thanks to whoever suggested the name!). Display PS and Level 2 are two
*disctinct* supersets of Level 1. NeXT uses all of DPS and most of Level 2,
and is, from what I have heard, going to fully support *both* in the future.
Hang on to your hats.

DL and comp.sys.next: I suppose SL assumes .next is some kind of special
extension.... That's why it won't index.

For Those Who Remember: I posted a note about fixing Mac-->NeXT RTF
problems awhile back. I've been working on a decent version of fixrtf (3.0),
but have been held back by an injury, midterms, and some Programming
Assignments From Hell, but I will try to get it done this weekend and possibly
even upload the source to ananon ftp site, since I just learned how to do
that. More later.
While I'm on ftp. Anyone have problems with bad checksums from downloaded
.tar.Z files? I have to uuencode-->download via tip-->uudecode as well....

I'd like to post a note about FrameMaker. I ordered it last month, and when
I got it, to my surprise and horror, discovered it does not support NeXTstep
typing conventions (alt-e e to get e acute). In fact, the defaults are very
nonintuitive (ctrl-q something-or-other for various symbols--more keystrokes
and nonintuitive). You *can* edit a huge kbmap file to simulate keymappings,
but that's too much of a hassle for me. FM has some other interface
inconsistencies, none so severe, but I was really disappointed to see this
low-level problem. Now someone at Frame didsend me a kbmap file that
approximates NS typing, but I really do want to be able to use my Preferences-
defined keystrokes, *all of them*, and for them to change when I change my
keyboard prefs (and I do, until NeXT fixes \|)....
I urge anyone who has similar problems with FM to contact Frame about it.
I have already done so. I really do like the app; it's a wonderful thing. But it's no good for me if I have this weird implicit keyboard on the thing.
Frame seems like a good, responsive company so far; let's hope they go the
extra 15% and buy 100% into NeXTstep.
I haven't heard any discussion about FM the group; what do people think?

Glad to be back! Nik A Gervae dejnsen@caen.engin.umich.edu

PS: How do you get a repeating footer on postings to the net? I'm still
vi-illiterate and have to use previously generated files to post at all....
