[net.auto] Need help from early Mustang fanatics

Forgive me for posting this to two similar newsgroups, but I need
some help identifying a car that I just got a handle on. The car is
a 1965 Mustang California Special fastback. Apparently, there were a
few of these beasts made. I would appreciate any information that anyone
might have on how to verify the originality of this car. If possible,
quote special id numbers, options, colors, standard packages and any
details of the car, since I have no idea of what I am looking at.
It would also be nice if I could get some guesstimates of its
possible worth. The car is not in the best of shape, but I have
an idea of what it would require to make it into a nice car.
Thanks in advance for your help.

As for authenticity of a 65 mustang GTCS fastback, no. The GTCS was
available only in 68 and only in the coupe model. The 65 shelby was
a fastback and was available with and without wing and scoops. The
wings are similar to those later used on the GTCS, but since the 65
shelby is much rarer beast, it is doubtful that anyone would represent
it as anything but a shelby. The Collectors Guide to Thoroughbred
Mustangs is the best reference of original mustangs, it even includes
exact production numbers.
