[comp.sys.next] fpu error

mwu@teri.bio.uci.edu (Matt Wu) (03/15/91)

Has anyone had major problems with Improv? Actually, I sincerely
doubt that Improv caused the problem I'm currently experiencing,
but since my computer crashed almost immediately after I ran
the program, it is not free from suspicion.

The problem I have right now is a system test error 42 (sometimes
43), which means the fpu has failed. So far as I know, there is no
way for software to damage the fpu, but I could be wrong.

Amazingly enough, I can still do a single-user boot off my NeXT
(bsd -s) and run kermit (after a fashion) like I'm doing now.
I even got it to run in multi-user mode, with the exception that
DPS doesn't work. I was able to log in from my roommate's machine,
though, and so was able to tar my files and ftp them to another
hard disk.

Does anyone know what could be causing the error besides the 68040
going bad? It was kind of disappointing, especially considering that
I just received Improv that day and Diagram! the next (which, by the
way, has been available from NeXT Connection at the student rate
of $25 since last Friday). Sigh.

On another note, does anyone know why build disk would fail on a
Quantam-105? Are there any low-level formatters out there that are
inexpensive or free?

Thanks in advance.
