I just upgraded to an 040/105 meg from a 030/accelerator drive. That went smoothly but I got somewhat strange behavior when I re-connected our external drive - an adaptec ACB-5500 SCSI-ST506 controller hooked to an ST506 Maxtor. The arrangement worked fine on our 030 but not on 040. When the 040 boots it finds the drive at scsi address 2 (target 2 - logical unit 0), retrieves its label, and mounts it. Fine. However, it proceeds to look for additional logical units at target 2 (logical unit 1, logical unit 2, ...). It of course fails to find labels for these phantom logical units and asks to initialize them when I log in. Once past these requests, everything is fine, the maxtor is mounted. But, regardless of how i respond to this initialization request, the same scenario ensues next time i boot the machine. Has something changed in the way SCSI is handled, should something be changed to avoid this behavior. I am presently reformatting the maxtor for other reasons, and a new label may do the trick, but if anyone has an idea as to what is happening I would like to know. marsella@cs.rutgers.edu
