Couple of quick questions from a NeW NeXT user... ;) I too was lucky enough to snarf a BL demo cube. :) ** (ear-ear). 1) OD noise -- My OD sounds like it is related to the gatling guns of old. Is this normal? Not having used an OD-only system before, I may well just be unaccustomed to it... I can live with it; I just want to be sure it's not something I should be worrying about. 2) rz/sz -- Ok. I've downloaded these, and wish to use Zmodem protocol for file transfers to/from at unix box at school (which has rz/sz also). This may sound dumb, but how do I do it?? I've tried logging in with Kermit, issuing a Sz (send) command on the remote host, quiting kermit, and issuing: rz < /dev/cua > /dev/cua. This doesn't seem to work. How are others out there using Zmodem? 3) tip problems -- I set up tip with no problems. However, I don't seem to be able to get the ~< ~> ~t or ~p to work. These seem to hang tip. Am I doing something stupid? Also, in the same vein, after hanging tip and killing it with ^C, is there any way to get another 'tip' session to connect to the modem without trying to dial, or 'synchronize' with the modem by sending commands to it? After tip hangs, I am able to reconnect with kermit, but not tip. Hmmm.... Any information would be appreciated. Please respond via email, and I'll summarize. Apologies if these questions sound stupid; I'm not a Unix-neophyte, just a Unix-communications-neophyte... ;) Thanks, Jon Cargille jon@cs.wisc.edu

Unfortunately, this is normal. Maybe we ought to bring back old
time radio... we could use the optical for machine-gun sounds effects :-).

I use zmodem by logging in with tip and using the ~$ command.
You need to get versions of sz and rz that support the -1 option.
You should also create a .tiprc that includes the command that
causes tip to use a Bourne shell subshell when it runs sz or rz.
Using the default csh causes complaints about permissions of
some sort.

I've seen the same behavior under 2.0.
