[comp.sys.next] The Ominous "Znert" Noise prelude to optical depression?

gtaylor@vme.heurikon.com (Gregory Taylor) (03/19/91)

So I'm up and cooking on that nice Fuji drive and I'm not using the
optical for much more than archiving. My pal Steve comes over for a
copy of Tetris et. al. I mount my optical and move the file to the
hard drive, then do the unmount. When I insert Steve's disk, the little
window comes up and asks me to insert my disk. I do, and the optical
drive begins making a NEW noise that chilleth me to the bone. A little
"Znert" that happens about once ever 20 or 30 seconds. In the meanwhile,
all is frozen....mouse, dialog, etc. The machine doesn't even respond to
summoning the monitor with [whateverwhateverTilde]. I'm feeling this faint
whiff of apprehension and doom. So I power down and try it again. The drive
will no longer take ANYTHING whatsoever without this behaviour.

This is a Texan BusinessLand drive, and I'm just wondering if any of
you have seen/heard this one before. If so, is there something I can
check in addition to looking into what I've got to do to get it fixed
[I'm obviously dispirited about shipping it back to Texas for Heaven
Knows how long].

Oh yes....where is the documented workaround for LISP in 2.0/on in ftp
land?

Terribly Depressed in the MidWessed.
