[net.auto] "winter fuel"

glenm@athena.UUCP (Glen McCluskey) (01/03/86)

I have a 1985 Corolla with about 32,000 miles on it.
Recently I have had problems with pinging on hills.
I took it to the Toyota dealer and they said that
it was tuned to spec, and that the pinging was due
to poor quality fuel; they said that the gas companies
are using "winter fuel" at this time. I have noticed
that different brands make a difference, with Union 76
getting rid of the pings, and Shell the worst.

Is there anything to this? If there is, what is the best
brand of gas to use?

I have never heard of the winter fuel business.
I do have the same problem with my 84 corolla and I discovered that
some brands are better than the other. For example: Hess was the best
and Mobil was the worst. My solution for the problem was to find the
cheapest premium fuel and treat the car to it once in a while. It seem
to help the problem a little even when I am using unleaded regular 87
octane.
