Well, I needed more memory so I came up with the following list after
getting some phone numbers from a current _MacWeek_:
=============================================================================
Memory type is 4MB (no-parity!), 80ns, "vertically-mounted low-profile" SIMM
Date: 14-Mar-91
=============================================================================
Place | Phone # | $/4MB | Shipping | Credit | Lifetime
| 1-800 | 80ns | 2nd day | Card Charge | Warranty
=============================================================================
Chip Merchant | 426-6375 | 165 | 10.87 | COD only | Five yr
--------------------+-------------+-------+----------+-------------+---------
Lifetime Mem Prods | 233-6233 | 179 | 5.63 | 2% | Y
--------------------+-------------+-------+----------+-------------+---------
Peripheral Outlet | 332-6581 | 179 | 8.00 | 3% | Y
--------------------+-------------+-------+----------+-------------+---------
Diamond | 541-7126 | 183 | 7.50 | none | Y
--------------------+-------------+-------+----------+-------------+---------
Technology Works | 688-7460 | 189 | 10.00 | none | Y
--------------------+-------------+-------+----------+-------------+---------
Memory Plus | 388-7587 | 190 | ???? | ???? | ?
--------------------+-------------+-------+----------+-------------+---------
Before I buy from Chip Merchant, can someone please send me any information,
good or bad, about any of the places listed above. I will probably order
late next week. What would be neat is if someone (who did the "leg-work")
could post a list like this every so often so that the NeXT community knows
what the going rate is for the 4MB SIMMs or even those paltry and obsolete ;)
1MB SIMMs.
Of course, the usual disclaimers apply - I don't have any affiliations
with the above companies, etc. I just want the best price I can get and
spread some helpful information around.

Regular readers will recall my problems with Chip Merchant 4MBx8 SIMMs. I am pleased to report that things have been straightened out and their promptly-delivered replacements work just fine. Oh yeah, 20MB is noticeably better than 16MB!!! Recap: Chip Merchant: 1MBx8 80ns [Mitsubishi] SIMMs known to work in cubes. 4MBx8 80ns [Samsung] horizontally-mounted SIMMs *did not* work in slabs. 4MBx8 80ns [Samsung] vertically-mounted ("low profile") SIMMs *did* work. 4MBx9 80ns [Samsung] horizontally-mounted SIMMs *did* work. Technology Works: 4MBx8 80ns "low profile" SIMMs known to work in cubes and slabs. *** TW's "official" prices are considerably higher than Chip Merchant's. However, if you tell their sales weasels what their competitors are asking, they'll negotiate. -=EPS=-
