Here is a slightly edited collection of replies I received on modems of choice for 68040 NeXT's running UUCP. Thanks to those who replied. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From: DECWRL::"cyliax@ecn.purdue.edu" "Ingo Cyliax" 18-MAR-1991 16:17:54.33 I have been using a 2400 Baud MNP5 modem from Cardinal. After I had it set up correctly, it works pretty good with UUCP. I haven't found a modem that will work correctly (autodial) with tip yet. I'm pretty happy with this modem. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: DECWRL::"cooper@plains.NoDak.edu" "Jeff Cooper" 18-MAR-1991 21:30:02.76 I'm currecntly using a Viva 2400/sendfax modem. I bought it at Best Buy (a local stereo/tv/computer chain) and I've been quite pleased with it. I haven't had time to try and make it send faxes, so I can't say for sure if that will work (but the difference between sendfax and no sendfax was 10 bucks so i figured what the hell, might as well try it) It'll only send fax at 4800 baud though...I've had UUCP set up and working fine for about a month now (polling 6 times a day) It cost $130 on sale, but you could probably get it cheaper mail-order, the only problem is that it isn't black! :-) I did have to return the first one i bought because of a faulty on/off switch, but other than that it's worked very well ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: DECWRL::"dennis@cpac.washington.edu" "Dennis Gentry" 18-MAR-1991 23:10:55.18 Depends on how much you want to spend, but I really like the Telebit t2500, or even the t1600. I hear they can be had for $750 (t2500) or $500 (t1600). The nice thing about the t2500 is that it does both PEP (telebit's proprietary, very high performance protocol for use with uucp) and v.32 (ordinary 9600 baud for interactive use). The t1600 does v.32 too, but no PEP. If you just want a 2400 baud modem, most any Hayes Smartmodem clone ought to do. I used to buy modems on a regular basis by calling 1-800-USA-FLEX, but I did have an obnoxious return problem with them once (they sold me an "MNP error correcting" modem that consisted of a regular modem plus a floppy disk for an IBM PC MNP program). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: DECWRL::"eps@cs.SFSU.EDU" "MAIL-11 Daemon" 20-MAR-1991 01:27:28.12 The modem of choice for *any* serious UUCP user is the Telebit 2500. Setup is described in NeXT's documentation. UUNET Technologies, Inc. sells these to U.S. customers for $899, plus $12 shipping+insurance (or $25.50 if you want next day air). You might find them for a few dollars less someplace else, but there's certainly no point paying more, and UUNET is an excellent company to deal with. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: DECWRL::"mauxci!otter!andrew@apple.com" "Andrew Tyldesley" 20-MAR-1991 05:57:09.31 To: tenny@ootool.dec.com CC: Subj: Re: What is the modem of choice for 68040 NeXT UUCP users? I am using a Zoom 2400 v42bis it has all the bells an whistles and came out as one of the top 3 in a test of similar modems. One of the ones it tied with was a Hayes I don't remember the other. The documentation is okay but needs work. I got it for $165 through computer shopper, can't remember the mail order place off hand. (give me a week).
