Isn't there someway to take a cue from the mac and amiga people and
start breaking this newsgroup into some pieces PLEASE!. The traffic is
getting quite heavy and I for one would appreciate some splitting of
general/programming/software-dist/hardware type topics, or SOME kind of
splitting anyway. What would it take to do this?

What would it take to do this? There is no more surefire way to double the traffic on a newsgroup than to suggest splitting it. I wish that the instant someone mentions splitting, that there would be a *.split newsgroup created for those discussions. Even using "k" doesn't help much, since nearly all the messages have different subject lines (I'm still putting up with this after *months* of such messages on comp.sys.handhelds).
