I've been toying with ideas for adding color to my mono NeXTstation. I've come up with two: putting it on the ethernet and putting it on the SCSI bus. I was talking with a co-worker who uses a lot of Apple hardware, and he says that SCSI monitors exist for the Mac; basically, you send them QuickDraw commands over the SCSI bus. This seems like it would be a bit expensive. You have to have enough logic on the monitor to understand QuickDraw. A similar thing for display PostScript would be even more expensive, and would need a prom upgrade every time display PostScript changed. A SCSI device that output color composite video in something like 4096 colors would probably have a reasonable market. It could be used on the NeXTstation mono or the low-end SPARC machines with no room for color cards, to cheaply add color. One could even put several on the same machine for an array of monitors. This sort of thing seems like it would be so worthwhile that it's hard to belive that nobody has done it. Can anyone give me any information about any efforts in this area? -- Doug DeJulio dd26+@andrew.cmu.edu (AMS/ATK mail) ddj@zardoz.club.cc.cmu.edu (NeXT mail)
