eps@toaster.SFSU.EDU (Eric P. Scott) (03/30/91)
The second official release of iwf (which allows an Apple ImageWriter II to be used as a low-quality PostScript printer or a pretty decent ASCII text printer) is now available from sutro.sfsu.edu [130.212.15.230] pub/iwf-2.0.tar.Z sonata.cc.purdue.edu [128.210.15.30] pub/next/2.0-release/source/iwf-2.0.tar.Z and should also be available from archive-server@cc.purdue.edu for those without FTP access. The most significant change is a conversion to use the new machportdevice operator for PostScript imaging. I use a null transfer function and the same halftone dictionary as NeXTMegaPixelDisplay, so it's functionally equivalent to the previous release. If you want to adapt my code to drive some other printer, this is an area you'll probably want to experiment with. Note that this is a source code release (no binaries!), so you will need the "Extended" Release to make use of it. The internal documentation is "better" but still not "great," and if this looks a little like a "first program," it is in some ways-- it's the first time I've used C Threads, and my first serious venture into the wonderful world of Mach ports and vm_stuff (with no "good" examples to draw from, either). iwf-1.1.tar.Z is still available (but unsupported) for sites that haven't upgraded to 2.x. -=EPS=-
