[net.auto] Wind Resistance of a Truck Tailgate

tonti@ptsfc.UUCP (Guy Tonti) (01/14/86)

Fellow netters, I feel the following will
make an excellent discussion point through the post-holiday blues.

Has anybody come across, or performed any research, on the savings achieved
in driving a pickup with the tailgate down? The curiousity is in whether
the savings are significant enough to warrant its periodic removal when
the bed is not in use.

Also, would it help as much to merely put the gate down as opposed to
removing it? (a reason given for not driving with it down is it blocks
the view of the license plate, but assuming this is not the case...)
Natural assumptions say that putting it down minimizes wind resistance,
so why don't truck manufacturers make them more easily removable?
