I read recently in Car & Driver that the Porsche 924 was going to be reintroduced in the US this summer. The VW engine will be replaced with an engine similar to the one in the 944. Sticker will be less than $15,000. Anyone care to speculate on whether this is true or not and whether it's a good deal? (The cheapest 944 goes for about 23K I think). ed ihnp4!hplabs!hp-pcd!ed

I highly doubt the 15K price, though. I'd expect more like 18K or 19K. I suspect Porsche is doing this because the 944 will get the 186 hp 16 valve version of the current 944 2.5l 4cyl while the 924S will keep the 2 valve version. --Jim Dempsey-- ..!decvax!bbncca!jjd jjd@BBN-UNIX.ARPA

If it really will sell for $15K, I would call it a good deal. The 924 has been sold all along in Europe (they have had 924, 924 Turbo, 944 and 944 Turbo). The model we'll be getting is the 924S, which indeed includes a smaller-displacement 944 engine (which is half of a 928 engine...). The _Car_ magazine had an extensive test (including a long tour through Scottish roads) in the November issue, I think. They said basically that in terms of pure speed it's not as exhilarating as the 944, but that it is in fact an excellent car, at its best on twisty Scottish roads... The 924S will have lower trim levels, but all the chassis development over the last nine years has been applied to it as well as the 944. The 944S model is due to be introduced soon as well, with four valves per cylinder. I expect that at this point the lineup will be: 924S (8 valves), 944S (16 valves), 944S Turbo (16 valves + turbocharger). \tom haapanen watmath!watdcsu!haapanen I'm all lost in the Supermarket I can no longer shop happily I came in here for that special offer Guaranteed personality (c) The Clash, 1979

I've heard it from several different sources, Autoweek, C&D, etc. The reviews have been mixed, but it is definitely better than the old 924. A new entry level Porsche.
