In trying to print to a remote printer using lpr (non-Netinfo),
the print window stayed open for several mins. with a whirling beachball.
In /usr/adm/lpd-err was the following error message:
Apr 2 12:31:50 cantrell lpd[1321]: unable to get network name
for local machine cantrell
We have been experiencing name-server problems for the
past couple of days. This error message looks to me like
a nameserver query failed trying to find out that the
local domain name was tamu.edu.
Since NeXT does not run named, I am not sure what is going on here.
On my other machines that run named, the local nameserver
would be able to resolve its own domain name,
and I don't believe I would get this error.
There are two configuration questions that might affect this
problem that are not clearly spelled out in the Network and Sys Admin
book:
1. For a non-Netinfo machine, should the host name set
in the local panel be hostname or hostname.domain.edu?
I have mine set to hostname without the domain information.
(Changing this to hostname.domain.edu will affect sendmail.cf
and maybe some other things).
2. For a non-Netinfo machine, should its host name be loaded
into the Netinfo database using niload? I did not load mine
in, but any normal /etc/hosts file would contain your own
host name.
Any ideas?
