[comp.sys.next] Viper/Dump problem solved

gn@rathe.cs.umn.edu (04/07/91)

After a short talk with NeXT (Thanks NeXT!), they
suggested the problem might be that the Viper 150
was a fixed block tape drive.

After tracking down the appropriate man page ( st (4))
I built a little program to set the archive to
fixed block I/O. If anyone wants this, let me know.

I then calculated how many feet of tape I would need
if this was 1600bpi tape ( ~8000 ) and dumped the hard
disk with the command:

dump 0fs /dev/rst0 8000

This worked great!

Just before Skylab re-entry:

TV Reporter: "Excuse sir, why are you wearing that odd aluminum hat?"

Man with Odd Hat:
"Well I figure the chances of a person getting hit by skylab falling
is one in a million, but what are the chances of it hitting a person
wearing a funny aluminum hat....it's got to be in the billions!"
