[comp.sys.next] Showing windows on top of dock icons

tmab+@andrew.cmu.edu (Thomas Mok) (04/08/91)

I am not sure whether there is a way to do the following:

I find it quite annoying that the dock icons (or the menus for this
matter) always
cover part of my windows. This gets worst when altdock is run. My working
space on the screen is effectively cut down. Is there a way to set it so that
when I click on my windows, they show up on top of the icons?

A minor point: I have heard complaints about monitors get burn-marks from
the white borders of the icons. The ability to do the above may help ease the
problem.

No, I haven't check the NeXTAnswers or FAQ yet.

Icons are higher in the window hierarchy than anything else (menus are
included in this as well).

Possible solutions:
 - use iLog (available from purdue archive site) to set the height of
the NeXT icon to 5 pixels automatically at login and drag the dock out
of the way when not using it.
 - AltDock: set your offset so that when the altDock is in its 'home'
position it is most of way off the screen. I usually have altDock's
default position over the AltDock application's icon-- at the bottom
right of the screen. W/the offset set so that most of the arrow icon is
off the screen, I don't lose the 5 pixel high NeXT icon.

 - set the default menu location to have only one pixel of the menu
title on the screen (so you can still grab it). You may have to use
'dwrite' from a shell to set such a strange default value.

I don't know in general how to make the dock icons lower than application
windows, but to fix the NeXT icon you can type

    % echo "0 Beepwindow setwindowlevel" | pft

This will change the window level of only the NeXT icon. If you then drag
this icon to the bottom of your screen, you will be able to use the entire
screen.

I went a step further and replaced the bitmap for the NeXT icon with a
33% gray rectangle, so it is indistinguishable from my background
color. This was done using the perl extract/combine scripts posted a
while back on the Workspace application. These two changes together
give the appearance of no dock, save your screen from dock burnin, and
still allow you to drag the dock up when you want to use it.
