[comp.sys.next] Wow! Wow! Wow! Free HW Upgrade!

trivedi@motcid.UUCP (Kamlesh Trivedi) (04/09/91)

I ordered, by fax, two NeXT 2.0 OS upgrades (N5507) on Feb 7. One for me
and one for a friend (I weighed the consequences of losing Dev status
and him pirating the OS --- so I sorta "nudged" him into buying one.)

On Apr. 8 the UPS person left two boxes at my doorstep. When I came home and
lifted them up, I immediately noticed a difference in weight and was angered
because I thought something had been left out of one of them (this is what I
get from reading the tirades on c.s.n :)

I opened one box (not reading the packaging) and it was a s/w upgrade.
I opened the other one and found different material packed in it. Then I
lifted the foam and it was: A STATIC BAG WITH THE 040 UPGRADE (N7003)!
My thoughts ran here, there and everywhere. I was elated, to say the least.

I was thinking about keeping it but, while exercising, I thought about some
apps that certain individuals had given me and then also how much each NeXT
employee would lose ($830 - $188(price of the s/w upgrade))/500 employees.
A big number if you view it percentage wise, huh?

So, I decided to return it. Note, *I KNOW I COULD HAVE* kept it since the
packing slip said that I received two s/w upgrades and because the h/w
upgrade didn't have a packing slip (which means that it was a s/w upgrade,
right?;) It appears like it was untraceable.

If this "gift" had arrived from Microsoft/AT&T/Lotus/Aston-Tate then I
would have kept it. No qualms! 'nuff said!

The following people's mailboxes should be flooded w/ commendations (not mine),
for heavily influencing my decision (from their past personal attention to
customers) to return the "free-040-upgrade":

Charles_Oei@next.com, Cal_Thixton@next.com (I'm going West this summer.),
Sina_Tamaddon@next.com, Dave_Stutz@next.com (I'm dying for DBKit!),

Susan_Rayl@next.com, Avidis_Tevanian@next.com (The Dev Camp was a model, guys!)

jis@lighthouse.com, rob@lighthouse.com (your attitude and actions speak
louder than any "four-color" ad that you may every take out in a trade-rag.
Twenty-five bucks for student-pricing on Diagram! F*ING incredible!)

Of course, GNU/FSF (for existing and putting out free stuff! I hope NeXT
uses your OS when it comes out.)

Consider this the ultimate form of customer satisfaction,
-KamT-

BTW, there's one condition to me returning the h/w upgrade, I will "personally"
give it to a NeXT employee with my one hand while I receive the second long-
awaited s/w upgrade with my other hand. Is that OK? I really don't feel
like messing w/ UPS.

Also, I was thinking about buying an h/w upgrade when the rumors of bundling
Soft-PC were flying around but now, I think I'll wait. "Variety is the spice
of life," NeXT!

Conrad, I'm still waiting to hear about how to start a NUG around here.
