[comp.sys.next] More serial port problems . . .

giddings@dingo.cs.wisc.edu (Michael Giddings) (04/15/91)

Hi,
I'm running 2.0 w/040 cube, and recently acquired an Abaton INTERFAX modem.
Because it does MNP, the modem can normally communicate with the computer
at speeds up to 9600 bps regardless of the phone-line rate. This initially
worked on my system when I tried it, i.e. modem and computer were communicating
at 9600 during a 2400 bps connection over the phone. . .

THEN something happened - I don't know what. The modem will communicate
with the computer at up to 9600 ONLY WHEN the DTR is low (at least I assume -
it only works when there is no connection to another modem). However,
as soon as the DTR is raised, the computer and modem cease to be able
to communicate at any speed greater than 2400 (gibberish sent/received).
I thought it was the modem, so I exchanged the original, to no avail. The
new one does the same thing (it had a new cable too). I also tried a 'clean'
copy of 2.0 on the OD (under which it had originally worked). I have followed
all the instructions on the net regarding modem setup, have read the serial
port and UUCP docs several times, and even talked to several Abaton Tech
people. Nothing seems to help!

Could this be another 2.0 problem? Has anyone else experienced it? It
doesn't seem to fall under the category of the getty locks for incoming
connectiooons that people had problems with. . . Hope the serial port
chip didn't get fried somehow!

Many thanks to those who responded regarding my modem problems!
As usual, the problem was in the one setting I hadn't played with
because I was sure it was correct. I had "automatic baud adjustment"
set, which I thought meant it would automatically adjust modem to
modem speed, not modem <-> host. Oh well. After receiving several
messages about this, I turned it off, and everything works fine (I
had already played around with all of the RTS/CTS, DCD, and other
settings to get them correct). It is kind of amazing to me that
even the two Abaton tech guys I talked to didn't suggest this. . .
