[comp.sys.next] Where did my LoginWindow go ?

root@next1.questor.wimsey.bc.ca (Operator) (04/17/91)

I turned on my machine the other day, and it goes through the normal bootup
but before it gets to the LoginWindow, the screen goes blank and stays there !

Anyone got any clues ?

No clues, but I can say that your not alone. I have had similar behavior
on a random basis (p=.1) for the past month.

Did you modify your /etc/inittab (or how the hell is this beast called) in
which is described which shell and/or window should be brought up upon
startup.

Perhaps you can login via a terminal on serial ports or via ethernet; if
not I think you have to rebuild the system from the optical disk :-(

Hope that helps...

I have had similar problems on a disk that the machine thought was 100% full.
I brought it up single user (bod -s from monitor) and then deleted something.
I deleted the swapfile (which had grown large on the optical due to a problem
in not recognizing my swapdisk. Might be worth a shot, but no guarantees.
