[comp.sys.next] Character data bases

johnw@reed.UUCP (John B. Windberg) (04/21/91)

I have this idea, somebody tell me if I should give up now.

I deal with offices that require multiuser database applications, character
based only. Dumb terminal stuff. My only experience has been networks and
either Paradox and DBase type stuff. I have reviewed several systems
consisting of a UNIX box and several dumb terminals. Even though these
systems are not by design "client/server" several were written as such.
These various UNIX boxes tend to be expensive, ie NCR, Microvaxen etc.
Can I not take a NeXT, stick a terminal concentrator on the eithernet port
and get a database with a decent 4GL and write my own? There don't seem to be
any development tools available on a next. and No databases except the various
server varients that give you absoulutely no development tools except IB and
C.

No matter how flashy a NeXT is getting it in the customers office is the first
step. Such a tactic should work well. Give a NeXT as a Multiuser DB box for less
than the cost of anything on the market.

Somebody please tell me about any such development environments if they exist.

Why do no NeXT or Mac sales people no what a database is either than Hypercard.
And no telling me about Sybase, Oracle, or Ingres again will not help.

Pardon my attitude, I just got into an argument with my roomie about the dishes
again, the slob.

Thanks in advance..
