[comp.sys.next] NeXTStep and IBM RS/6000

minich@unx2.ucc.okstate.edu (Robert Minich) (04/21/91)

At a recent presentation on my campus given by some IBM critters
regarding AIX (IBM's UNIX), I asked if they had any plans for NeXTStep.
I was told that they were ready to release 1.0 in October 90 but that
NeXTStep 2.0 from NeXT would make that a bad idea. Apparently, they felt
burned: "Our direction is Motif." Sorry, I don't know names/titles
but I felt that this was important.
If this is truly the case, it is very unfortunate. Unless NeXT gets
some other manufacturers running NeXTStep, I doubt they can create new
standard, de facto or otherwise, and thus their longevity is not
entirely certain in my mind. Having IBM on one's side seemed like as
good an endorsement as one could have for a relatively small player like
NeXT.
