I just got my Cube, and have spent the last week upgrading to 2.0, configuring it and playing with it. I'm impressed: it's the first time I've ever seen a computer (in particular a Unix one) that works as advertised right out of the box, no glitches, clean, no sweat. NeXT has done a really great job. Now I'm considering whether I should let it on all day or not. I know Unix machines aren't supposed to be turned on and off that often, and that the machine would be missing some cron jobs if it's off at the time, but I'm concerned about power consumption. Does anybody have advice on how much (or how little) the Cube likes it being turned on and then back off about once a day? Which home appliance (TV set, fridge, whatever) would be comparable to the Cube in power consumption? On another spirit, over the years I've got quite used to a trackball as a positioninig device instead of the mouse (cronical lack of desk space). I have a trackball I've used as a mouse replacement for my old Atari ST, and I've noticed that the mouse's plug is a standard miniDIN-8, which I could wire to work with the cube if I knew the pinout. Now, where can I find this pinout? I can't find it in the docs that came with the machine. And if you're considering not answering to me for fear that I might commit a sacrilege, don't worry: I promise I'll paint the device black before connecting it.
