[comp.sys.next] Default Icon ?

jy0q+@andrew.cmu.edu (Jules Andrew Yasuna) (04/18/91)

Normally a directory appears in the browser as a "folder" icon. There are
other icons used for folders (ie a "house" for the users's home). Is there
any way to link a different icon for a specified folder. This is necessary
because I have two directories with the same name (on different directory
trees, of course).

You can make your own 48x48 TIFF icons and include them under the
directory where you want to see your icon. All you need to do is
call the TIFF file ".dir.tiff" (no quotes). You can also include a
".opendir.tiff" that will be used as the alternate image (i.e. when
you drag another icon into it for moving or copying).

You can also use larger TIFF files (greater than 48x48). Workspace
will scale it to fit in a 48x48 grid but you'll lose some detail.

	Have fun!

Now, has anyone come up with any interesting icon pairs?

Here's a crude version of something that might be appropriate for
an anonymous FTP directory (where anything you drop would be,
ahem, "exposed" to the world).

C'mon guys, get creative!

Varun Mitroo, a med student at Ohio State, has a nifty 3-D skull for his
home directory and a version with it's jaw open for copying. Very slick.
If you want a copy, email him at mitroo@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu.
