There seem to be a number of confusing and/or confused postings regarding programs to display *.eps and *.tiff files on the NeXT's screen background. This is due to the fact that there are (at least) three, called 'background', 'Background' and 'Background2'. background is a csh script that I wrote that displays eps files (only) on the screen background and has switches to specify if you want the image scaled, centered, tiled, etc. and what gray to fill with. It is also included as part of 'nphoon' hack on the NeXT archive. There are 1.0 versions of this background script that don't work under 2.0. Get a newer one from the cs.orst.edu archive if you need it. Background is an application by Scott Hess (scott@gac.edu) that 'tiles an image on the background window, and goes away when you log out'. it operates on eps and tiff files and provides very basic functionality. Background2 is an extended version of Scott's program done by Andreas Windemut (windemut@lisboa.ks.uiuc.edu) that allows you to load more than one image or tile to use a a background (either manually or automatically). This package also includes two command line (C) programs called 'background' and 'sysbackground' for setting the background from the shell (and scripts). - Christopher PS: And, of course, you can always use 'Scene' to do the job.
